Looking to get licensed? The process is different state to state and at different levels, but generally, it takes these four steps:

  1. Education: You'll need to earn a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work (BSW or MSW) from an accredited institution. Some states may have specific requirements for the number of credit hours or fieldwork experiences needed for licensure.

  2. Supervised Experience: Most states require a certain number of supervised hours of social work practice, usually under the guidance of a licensed social worker or another qualified professional. This experience helps social workers develop the essential skills and competencies.

  3. Licensing Exam: The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) administers the licensure exams, which vary based on the level of licensure you are seeking (e.g., Bachelor's, Master's, or Clinical level). The test at all levels is 170 questions taken over four hours. SWTP practice tests help in all states and at all levels!

  4. Application and Licensure: The application process will likely involve submitting documentation of your education, supervised experience, exam scores, and any other required materials. Once your application is reviewed and approved, you'll be granted your social work license, allowing you to practice legally as a social worker in your state.
