Need LCSW study materials from BTA or any program. Failed written test one time. Please assist.

This passed Saturday, I took and passed the first part the California State Board exam. I DID NOT attend any prep courses. I did oder and use the flash cards and biopsychocial workbooks from Gerry Grossman. I made flashcards from the questions in the test booklet. It was easier that I anticipated.

Hi All, just wanted to share a great resource with everyone. After using 3 major test prep companies’ materials and failing 3 times, I finally got referred to Amanda Rowan. She is an amazing test prep coach. She understands these exams and gives you clear strategies and covers the essential content. The other companies drown you in stuff to memorize, Amanda let’s you know what you have to know and how you have to know it. She also works with people who are on a budget. She really is an angel! Her number is 310-709-1670. Good luck!

Studying for the CA LCSW exams. I’m a recently widowed mom of 4, so looking for anyone who’d like to donate or sell their study material, especially from BTA. But I’ll take any program. It’s hard to pull together the significant fees for the study materials with my budget now. Thanks!

Does anyone know whether we are tested on the “evidence codes” pertaining to law and ethics? What knowledge is needed for that section?!?!

    Thanks :-)

re: CA clinical vignette exam -

I took the Clinical Vignette exam on Monday, and I PASSED!!!!!! I used Berkeley Training to prepare for both tests. I don’t know if this helps anyone but I wanted to share that, for me, taking the BTA workshops, using the study materials, and then using the online sample exams made all the difference. Working through each exam one question at a time, researching the answer, comparing my answer with BTA – and then trying to logic out why their answer was correct BEFORE reading the explanation really helped make the material “stick.” After working through all 8 exams, I then started over, taking the tests ”on the clock” – comparing the questions I missed with the results of the first pass. If I missed the same question I re-read the BTA material re: that topic. I also took their advice re: studying as if it was an essay exam.

does anyone have used BTS test materials for the California exam? please let me know I dont have much money to buy them…

  • mc

hello, I have been using aatbs and bts. Colleagues who have passed the exams suggested to do practice test and learn from every answer; such as referring back to the workbooks. AAtbs is very very detailed…in a way they overkill it with info and BTS condenses the info. I like to have both because it gives a clearer picture. Have u taken your exam yet?

  • Stella

I tried both grossman and Aatbs and did not feel like they prepared me. I was testing 90s and still failed. Does anyone else feel like that their stuff is not what is Ipoh the test.

  • JH

I have attended a two day workshop to prep for the LCSW exam. I study the material over and over and still fail the exam. Do anyone know of any recent update study guide material that can be helpful. I plan to take the exam September/October.

  • sk

I used AATBS and failed the Written Exam twice. Can anyone recommend me a good study material? I’m planning on taking the test some time in August/September. Should I go with Berkeley?

  • anonymous

BTA was awesome for the first exam, I thought their online practice exams were a very fair representation of the actual exam.
I’ve now switched to Grossman for the Vignette.
Anyone have any suggestions about the 2nd exam and how to adequately prep for it?

  • Rick

AATBS seems better, however the exam is also entirely to difficult. I graduated from an accredited school, did the 3200 supervised hours, and have studied my butt off and still the exam has a 52% pay rate. It seems unfair after all that work to be eligible. I would think 70% pass rate would be appropriate.

  • Rick

Gerry Grossman sucks for the Vignette exam, their trainers are all MFTs and the package no matter what it says is for the MFT exam as a social worker this is a sham, I think I paid $700 for it. Its been put in my recycling bin long ago.

I used the AATBS materials (borrowed from 2003 and only used printed copies of the tests) and passed the first exam without a problem. I felt well prepared and confident as I took the test. I purchased their materials for the clinical vignette and even took the one day workshop and totally failed the it. I took their practice tests and was did all of the practice questions and towards the end I was averaging about 70-75%. I am not going to use their materials again as I feel they did not prepare me adequadely (I will try Berkeley Training Associates). I think that AATBS needs more full length practice exams (they only one two) and since I already took them all I know I will start to remember the answers and it won’t help me. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

I passed the LCSW exam in Hawaii 11 years ago. I have also passed the ACSW, the DCSW, and just a month ago, I passed the California written exam. I passed all of these tests with no problem. I just sat for my Vignette test last Monday and BOMBED!! I have been working as a private practitioner for years, and I have been doing clinical assessments and diagnostics in my practice. Does anyone know of good study material specifically designed for the Vignette test? This test seems tricky – I thought the format was quite confusing. I had no problem with any of the others. Thanks to anyone who can help! I can’t take it again until May, but that will give me time to study!

  • I have been using the Gerry Grossman Seminar prep course and it helped me passed my standard written test for LCSW. Unfortunately, I did not pass my clinical vignette using their prep course. What prep course seem to be the best in terms of passing the clinical vignette. Please help me. I need to pass the last test.

I have been using Berkeley Training Associates (BTA) for my LCSW studying process. For the written examination, I studied from the workbook, online practice exams, attended the workshop, and consulted with Dr. Taubman as needed. I plan to continue using BTA for the clinical vignette examination, as I feel that it has prepared me accordingly for the exams and for my practice. Good luck.

I’ve been working with the Berkeley Training Associates and have been very satisfied with their workshop, written prep materials and especially the online practice exams. I passed my LCSW written with no problem (wasn’t nervous, felt totally familiar with the exam format and content). I feel pretty good about the upcoming vignette exam and find that the online practice helps me hone in on the areas I need to study more closely. As a mom of 2 toddlers who works full time & commutes, I don’t have much extra time to study so BTA has been very helpful in maximizing the time I do have!

  • Charito

Try gerry grossman seminars, it was helpful. just google them.

  • SWP

Try out the practice questions linked on the right to see what looks good to you. I went w/ AATBS. No complaints.

Hi can anyone recommend a good training course online to prepare for the LCSW in California?

  • Anonymous

    THANK YOU!

  • WB

Not sure about the passing percentage. Seems to be a BBS secret. I don't think the correct answers # is higher than sixty-something percent. (An AATBS advisor seemed to think I was test ready getting 70%+ on their practice exams.) Remember this: Of the 40 questions, 10 are testers and don't count for your score, so don't be alarmed if some questions make little-to-no sense. Enjoy.

  • Anonymous

Does anybody know how many of the 40 questions you have to get right to pass the Clinical Vignette Exam?

  • SWP

    Anon,

If you're in California, there are two tests, a "standard written" and a "clinical vignette." Most other states, I'm told, have just one test. If you're in CA, the BBS explains in their booklet:

    http://www.bbs.ca.gov/pdf/publications/lcscvhbk_0906.pdf

    Good Luck.

I have a question, maybe someone can answer for me. I recenlty was approved to test for my LCSW. I have all the hours etc. completed, and have an MSW degree. I notice reference on this site for 2 different tests, the first and the second vignette. What is the difference, I was unaware that there were 2.
